US Bottled Water Sales Continued to Rise in 2007
The International Bottled Water Association (IBWA), in conjunction with Beverage Marketing Corporation (BMC) has released 2007 bottled water statistics, compiled by BMC, a research, consulting, and financial services firm dedicated to the global beverage industry (www.beveragemarketing.com). These numbers show that U.S. bottled water sales and consumption continue to rise, as consumers increasingly choose bottled water over other beverages.

In 2007, total bottled water volume was 8.8 billion gallons, a 6.9 percent increase over 2006, and the 2007 bottled water per capita consumption of 29.3 gallons increased nearly two gallons, from 27.6 gallons per capita the previous year.

Bottle Cleaning Must Meet FDA and IBWA Standards. How To Select the Right Washer for Your Business
For those in the bottled water industry, it is obvious why bottles must be properly washed before they pass through the filling and capping processes.

Throughout manufacturing, empty bottles are vulnerable to a variety of airborne contaminants, from the instant they leave a customer’s water cooler to the time they are filled with water.

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations and International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) industry standards require that all bottles be washed to strict specifications.

Bottling production lines must be located within clean rooms — controlled-atmosphere rooms that reduce or eliminate dust, insects and bacteria from the areas in which bottles are washed, filled and capped.

Some high-performance bottle washer/filler units have built-in, self-contained clean rooms that isolate the bottle-washing process from airborne dust or bacteria.

To comply with government and industry standards, bottle washers must be capable of thoroughly cleaning bottles using an effective cleansing agent and water solution heated to a minimum of 120 degrees Fahrenheit for at least one minute.

Norland Shows at Culligan Event for First Time
Norland International attended the Culligan Distributors convention in Orlando, Florida April 24. Norland’s Matt Rennerfeldt and Jon Marco staffed the company’s booth, talking with many interested attendees.

“Norland attracted a lot of attention at the show,” Rennerfeldt said. “We’ve got a number of Culligan distributors as clients already, and interest in bottled water in general and Norland equipment in particular at the show was clearly evident. Culligan dealers are learning that Norland has solutions for both the rural franchise bottler and the larger conglomerate bottlers."

Pretreatment of Source Water
High on the must-do list for entrepreneurs entering the bottled water business is testing of your source water to determine what types of pretreatment will be needed to meet Food and Drug Administration and bottled water industry standards.

Norland International engineer John Swancara wrote an article for publication in Water Technology magazine that provides an excellent overview of the pretreatment process. In the article, he defines the key types of source water, which contaminants are typically found in each, and describes preferred pretreatments for each. Handy, easy-to-read tables are provided. To view the article in PDF format, click http://www.norlandintl.com/bottled_water_articles.asp,
then scroll down to “Pretreatment of Source Water for Bottled Water Applications.”
