Norland International  - Oxo-biodegradable PET Bottles

Norland International Introduces Oxo-biodegradable PET Bottles to the Bottled Water Industry, as Strategic Partner with Planet Green Bottle Corporation.
These new bottles are designed to decompose naturally within 5 to 10 years, greatly relieving the impact of empty plastic bottles on the environment.

About Oxo-Biodegradable PET Bottles for the Bottled Water Business

Norland International has partnered with Planet Green Bottle Corporation to introduce oxo-biodegradable (oxo-bio) PET preforms and plastic bottles to the bottled water industry.

Today, approximately 60 billion plastic water bottles are discarded annually in the United States, according to industry sources. If those bottles contained oxo-bio materials they would disappear in four to 10 years. Industry sources tell us only about 23% of all PET bottles are recycled, leaving 77% to go to landfills or just tossed out. That’s why it’s so important that the bottled water industry moves quickly to adopt oxo-bio bottles and why Norland International has gotten involved with this technology early.

The oxo-biodegradable product is named reverte™, a registered trademark of Wells Plastics Ltd., that has been developed as an additive for PET plastic bottles that greatly enhances decomposition of the bottles.

Here’s how the oxo-biodegradable process works, according to the product’s developers:
  • Reverte™ master batch is blended into the PET resins used to make the pre-forms for the bottles.
  • Once disposed of and exposed to UV light, heat and moisture, the discarded bottle commences its degradation profile, first embrittling and then breaking into small pieces, once the molecular weight is reduced sufficiently the material becomes available for bio-digestion. In short, the broken down matter becomes a food source for bacteria or microbial activity. In general terms, the anticipated time to totally degrade the plastic bottle is estimated to be about 5 to 10 years, depending on environmental conditions in which the bottle has been placed.

All Norland blow molders process the new oxo-biodegradable PET performs.
